Rayong, a province in eastern Thailand, offers a wide variety of attractions from spectacular mountains to crystal clear beaches in the Gulf of Thailand. Some of the well-known destinations among travelers worldwide are Ko Samet and Mun Islands. Besides breathtaking natural attractions, Rayong is also famous for food products such as fish sauce, seafood, shrimp paste, and tropical fruits. Actually, Chanthaburi, Rayong, and Trat are Thailand’s eastern provinces often referred to as the Land of Fruits by the Thais. When asked which province is the main producer of fruits, a lot of Thais would say Rayong.
What to see and do at the Fruit Festivals
Tropical fruits festivals in Rayong are held annually in many districts with different names and dates. The best time of the year to join these festivals is from May to June when delicious fruits are ready to be picked and enjoyed. Some of the popular festivals are as follows: Sweet Pineapple Festival, Sweet Mongkut of Nong Taphan Festival, Rayong Fruit Festival at Thapong Fruit Market, Wang Chan Fruit Street Festival, and Amphoe Klaeng Fruit Festival. Highlighted activities are decorated fruit parade, fruit contests, exhibitions, cultural rformances, concerts, selling fresh fruit and fruit products. Those who love the divine flavors of mango (ma-muang), mangosteen (mang-kut), pineapple (sapparod), durian (tu-rian), rose apple (chompoo) or rambutan (ngo) will not be disappointed.
Fruit orchard tour is also an interesting activity. This innovative agro-tourism campaign was first promoted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) about a decade ago as an option other than the usual sea, sand, and sun. From mid-April to July during the harvesting season, many fruit orchards and plantations welcome visitors for sightseeing and fruit buffet. Some provide food and accommodation as well. Walking or cycling around the lush orchards and pick some fruit from the tree is a fun way to eat the beloved fruit. Also, visitors can learn about farming practices behind the high-quality fruit. Some of the orchards that are open all year round include Suphattra Land and Suan Lamai. Fruit orchards that are open only during fruit harvesting season are Suan Yai Da, Suan Phooyai Sawet, Suan Lamduan, and Suan Lung Thongbai, to name a few. Prices for fruit buffet are varied from 300 – 600 THB per person.
