Surat Thani

Surat Thani is the capital of the local province of Surat Thani (often shortened to Surat), which is the largest of Thailand's southern provinces, on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand. The name of the city was given by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). In translation Surat Thani means City of Good People.

Surat Thani is the gateway to Thailand's east coast islands of Ko Samui, Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan, as well as to the natural beauty of six national parks:

• National Marine Park Ko Ang Thong (Ko Ang Thong marine national park);
• National Park Khao Sok (Khao Sok national park);
• Khlong Phanom National Park;
• National Park Kaeng Krung (Kaeng Krung national park);

• Tai Rom Yen National Park.

Surat Thani is located 700 km to Bangkok and around 800 km to Pattaya.
