Sai Yok National Park, Kanchanaburi
Just a few hours’ drive from Thailand’s capital Bangkok, Kanchanaburi has been known worldwide for a long time. It is rich in history, especially of World War II, and it is a paradise on earth for nature lovers. There are seven national parks in Kanchanaburi namely Erawan National Park, Chalerm Rattana Kosin National Park, Sai Yok National Park, Khao Lam National Park, Sri Nakarin Dam National Park, Thong Pha Phum National Park, and Lam Klong Ngu National Park.
It can be said that Sai Yok National Park is widely well-known among Thais as King Rama V visited the picturesque waterfalls in 1888 and his brother composed a song describing the beauty of Sai Yok Waterfall. Located in its namesake Sai Yok district and Thong Pha Phum district, this national park became Thailand’s 19 th national park in 1980 because of its natural beauty, abundance of wildlife, and historic significance.
Visiting magnificent waterfalls is a must-do activity in the national park. Lots of visitors opt for taking a train from Kanchanaburi to Namtok Station. Sai Yok Waterfall is roughly two kilometers away. Water flows from the waterfall into the Khwae Noi River. Visitors can also appreciate its scenic view over the bridge or from the cruise boat.
Visitors can also enjoy rafting along the breathtaking landscapes of the Khwae Noi River. Rapids, deep limestone canyons, and sandy beaches can be seen there. If you want to explore caves, there are many caves in the national park, but the famous ones are Daowadueng and Lawa. The beautiful Daowadueng Cave can be divided into eight chambers, and each was named after its appearance such as the curtain chamber. The 485-meter-deep Lawa Cave has a small entrance, but its large chamber can amaze visitors with stalagmite and stalactite. Archeological artifacts of human activity from the past were discovered here as well.Last but not least, if lucky, visitors can watch the smallest species of bat called Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat. It is believed that the bat is the world’s smallest mammal which weighs only 1.5-2 grams. This endangered species can be found only in Sai Yok National Park’s caves.
Admission fees are 300 THB for adults and 200 THB for children. It opens daily from 06:00 to 18:00.Accommodations and a campsite are available.
