Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Chanthaburi
This magnificent catholic cathedral is the largest Christian church in Thailand. It is located on the east bank of Chanthaburi River in the central part of Chanthaburi City, the capital of Chathaburi Province.
The history of the cathedral dates to 1711, when it was just a small chapel founded by a small group of Vietnamese Catholics, fleeing the religious persecution. It was then reconstructed four times.
The current Gothic-style construction is influenced by the French, who occupied the area of Chanthaburi in the last decade of 19 th century. The cathedral was finally inaugurated by the French archbishop Emil Augusto Blaem, who held the ceremony on January 10th, 1909.
The cathedral is famous for its impressive twin spires on the bell towers, beautiful stain glass windows and ornate interior, which reminds of a medieval hall. During the 2nd World War the spires were removed in order to prevent British and American bombers of using the cathedral as a navigational landmark. The spires
were restored after the war. The ceiling inside the cathedral is decorated as a Noah’s ark wooden bilge.
The statue of the Virgin Mary is the central element of the cathedral. The statue is decorated with huge number of semi-precious gems (200,000 – 500,000 gems by some estimates). All the gems were mined in the province, which is the center of gem trade in Thailand, and donated by the local Christians. The base of the statue
is a pure silver cast.
The cathedral attracts a lot of visitors each year, mostly due to its unique West
European medieval flavor, so unusual for this part of the world.
