Located in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi province approximately 20-30 km north of crowded Bangkok, Koh Kret is a manmade island that was completely cut off due to the expansions of the canal in 1722. It covers an area of 4.2 km 2 in the middle of the Chao Phraya River. Not many people realize that this island is actually the closest island to the Thai capital. Mon people settled down here for hundreds of years ago. It is considered a hidden gem where locals live a very simple life, and they still practice some old traditions. Once you are on the island, you would see that there are neither wide roads nor cars. Locals generally get around by foot, bicycle or motorcycle.

Main Attractions at Nonthaburi: Koh Kret

Thai - Mon cultural practices are easily seen there through temple architectural styles, food, and crafts. There are many temples on the island. For example, Wat Poramaiyikawas is a royal temple. Some highlights of this place are the Mon-style pagoda which contains Buddha relics, mural painting with Thai pattern, and beautiful door panels. Wat Sao Thong Thong is also interesting for it houses a unique star fruit-like pagoda that cannot be found anywhere else in Thailand.
The trip to Koh Kret will not be completed without eating Mon recipes, tasting a wide variety of desserts, and paying a visit to a pottery shop. Food stalls and craft shops are scattered along a narrow path. Some pottery shops provide pottery-making demonstrations, and visitors can try to make their own pottery at those shops as well. A lot of people also like to sit and sip their favorite drink along the river bank after walking or cycling. Such a laid-back atmosphere is absolutely refreshing.
