Sukhotai

During a short but brilliant period (1238-1376), the city of Sukhothai became the capital of Thailand, creating a single nation of the Thai people and leaving a phenomenal artistic heritage. Nowadays, the impressive ruins of ancient Sukhothai, which rise 58 kilometers northwest of Phitsanulok, have been turned into the Sukhothai Historical Park - one of the most visited ancient cities.

There are few hotels and few other services in the ancient Sukhothai area, so most tourists stay in the so-called New Sukhothai, a modern market town 12 kilometers to the east, which is well connected by transport to the Old City. There are excellent restaurants. This is a small friendly town, spread over the river Yom, often visited by tourists, but not at all crowded with them.

New Sukhothai offers a couple of excellent guesthouses. This is a great place to stay for a few days. In addition, it is very convenient to visit the Ramkhamhaeng National Park from the New Town, as well as the nearby ruins of the cities of Si Satchanalai and Kampeng Phet.

Sukhothai Historical Park is the most famous place in Thailand where they celebrate Loy Krathong, the "festival of lights", the most beautiful festival on the rivers, when the inhabitants of the kingdom can rejoice and give thanks to the water - the basis of life. For 9 days in October-November, the ruins of Sukhothay become the center of an exciting festival. All hotels are full during the festival, so book your hotel room in advance if you don't want to sleep on the floor.

Sukhotai is located 420 km North to Bangkok and 580 km to Pattaya.
